A Pretentious Cheer
Premiered at Hamlin Park Just Another Recent Grad Show II February 2018
A Pretentious Cheer delves into the action of performing by following three dancer’s actions in an attempt to impress. Karen was attracted to the concept of pretension by reading Dan Fox’s 2016 Essay Pretentiousness: Why It Matters. A Pretentious Cheer investigates how people perform when hoping to receive adulation in their day-to-day life. Through high intensity movement, the dancers question if pretension is purely negative; can pretension be another form of acting and how does it compare to the “authentic self.”
